Colombian Banking: More Complicated Than It Should Be
Banking in Colombia as a foreigner is a process, not a transaction. The system is conservative, documentation-heavy, and designed around Colombian citizens. But once you're set up, the infrastructure works well — mobile payments are universal, Wise transfers arrive in minutes, and neobanks have dramatically simplified daily financial life.
Traditional Banking: Bancolombia
Bancolombia remains the most recommended bank for foreigners in Medellín. It has the widest ATM network, the most robust online banking, and — critically — the best compatibility with international wire transfers and Wise.
What You Need
- Valid visa + passport
- Cédula de Extranjería (the temporary receipt "contraseña" is NOT accepted)
- Second photo ID
- Employment or pension documentation
- In-person branch visit required — no fully digital account opening
Neobanks: Nequi and DaviPlata
Nequi
Nequi (26+ million users) is Colombia's dominant mobile wallet. It accepts cédula de extranjería for account opening — fully digital, free, no management fees.
- PayPal integration: Works, but the commission has increased to 7% + IVA (19%) — effectively ~8.3%. Maximum per transaction: $2,000 USD.
- Payoneer integration: Launched March 2025 with a flat $3.00 fee, but reportedly requires Colombian citizenship by birth — excluding cédula de extranjería holders.
- Best for: Daily peer-to-peer payments, utility bills, Uber, restaurant payments.
DaviPlata
DaviPlata transformed into a full neobank in October 2025. It accepts cédula de extranjería and offers features Nequi doesn't:
- Credit card (pre-approved for qualified users)
- NFC contactless debit card
- Savings "pockets" earning 8.25% E.A.
- International remittances from 16+ partners (DolEx, Ria, Xoom, MoneyGram, WorldRemit, Remitly) — funds arrive in under 1 hour, free for receivers
Other Options
- Nu Colombia (Nubank): Savings account + credit card, no fees. Accepts cédula de extranjería.
- Ualá Colombia: Launched foreigner access September 2024.
- MOVii: Accepts PEP, PPT, and cédula de extranjería.
International Transfers: Wise Wins
Wise (formerly TransferWise) is the gold standard for sending USD to Colombian bank accounts:
- Fee: Approximately $30–$36 per $1,000 USD transferred via ACH/bank transfer
- Exchange rate: Mid-market rate with no markup
- Speed: 86% of transfers to Bancolombia arrive in under 5 minutes
- Limitation: Wise cannot send to Nequi or DaviPlata — only traditional bank accounts (Bancolombia, Banco de Bogotá, BBVA, Davivienda)
- Maximum per transfer: $2,900 USD equivalent
Frequently Asked Questions
Tourist visas are systematically rejected for formal banking products at traditional banks. Nequi and DaviPlata accept cédula de extranjería (which requires a long-term visa). On a tourist stamp, your options are limited to international cards and cash.
For USD-to-COP transfers, Wise offers mid-market rates with fees of approximately $30–$36 per $1,000. It's consistently cheaper than bank wire transfers ($35+ SWIFT fee plus unfavorable exchange rates). 86% of transfers to Bancolombia arrive within 5 minutes.
The PayPal-to-Nequi commission has increased to 7% + IVA (19%), making the effective rate approximately 8.3%. For a $1,000 transfer, you'd lose about $83 to fees. Wise to Bancolombia is significantly cheaper.
A RUT (Registro Único Tributario) is your Colombian tax ID. Banks may require it for account opening. You can obtain one at any DIAN office with your cédula de extranjería. It's free and usually same-day.
